Privacy Policy — Papyr

Papyr ("the App") is operated by Martin Condet, registered as auto-entrepreneur in France.

The short version

Your PDFs stay on your device. Audio conversion requires sending text to our server, but we don't store your documents. No accounts, no tracking.

2. Data Stored on Your Device

The App stores the following data locally on your device only:

  • PDF documents you import (copied to the App's local storage)
  • Annotations and highlights you create
  • Bookmarks and reading progress
  • Document metadata (title, author, page count, thumbnail)
  • Audio files downloaded after conversion
  • Preferences (reading settings, theme, playback position)
  • In-app purchase/subscription receipts (managed by Apple)

3. Audio Conversion Service

When you convert a PDF to audio using the premium AI voice engine, the following occurs:

  • Text content extracted from your PDF is sent to our conversion server (self-hosted on Hetzner, located in the EU).
  • A content hash (SHA-256) of the normalized text is generated to check if audio already exists in our smart cache.
  • If cached: The pre-generated audio is returned immediately. No text is transmitted beyond the hash.
  • If not cached: The full text is sent for conversion, audio is generated, and the result is cached for future users with the same document.
  • A device identifier is used to authenticate conversion requests and enforce usage limits. This is a randomly generated ID stored on your device — it is not linked to your Apple ID or any personal information.

We do not store your PDF files on our server. Only the extracted text is processed for conversion, and only the generated audio is cached.

4. Smart Cache

The smart cache stores generated audio indexed by content hash. This means:

  • If another user converts the same document, they receive cached audio instantly.
  • The cache contains audio files only — not source PDFs, not user information, not reading history.
  • Cache hits are free and do not count against conversion limits.

5. Free Apple TTS

The free text-to-speech option uses Apple's on-device AVSpeechSynthesizer. This processes text entirely on your device with zero network activity.

6. Analytics & Tracking

None. We do not use any analytics SDK, crash reporting, advertising framework, or user behavior tracking.

7. In-App Purchases

Subscriptions (Premium, Pro) are processed entirely by Apple. We do not receive or store payment information.

8. iCloud Sync

Reading progress and annotations may sync via iCloud if enabled on your device. This data is stored in your personal iCloud account and governed by Apple's privacy policy. We do not have access to your iCloud data.

9. Your Rights (GDPR)

You have the right to access, rectify, erase, and port your data. For data on our conversion server (device ID, cached audio), contact us to request deletion. For local data, it is entirely under your control on your device.

10. Children's Privacy

The App does not contain age-restricted content and does not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

11. Changes to This Policy

We will update this policy before shipping any features that change data collection practices and notify users in the App.
